  Northern Exposure – The Complete
First Season (USA)

Northern Exposure was a hit television show that hit the airwaves back in 1990. Running 5 seasons on CBS, it revolved around a doctor making his way in a small town in Anchorage, Alaska.

Almost fifteen years later, it has been released on DVD, a medium that didn't even exist at the shows conception. To add some fun for fans long awaiting this show, the seasons were released with some special packaging. Was the wait worth the release?

This is a great presentation! The case comes wrapped in what appears to be the same material as a parka, it's bright orange color blazes on our DVD shelf, making you want to reach up, unzip it, and start watching the TV show. Across the front of the package is the name of the show, and text letting us know we're getting the entire first season.

This is a really effectively designed exterior. The parka style cover pays homage to the show itself. And it doesn't stop there. The pull tab to open the case is a miniature moose! The horizontal stitching, vertical zipper, and folds at the top all give the packaging a true parka feel.

Unzipping the package, you immediately realize you also have to open the velcro strips at the top that hold it closed. This is a good design idea; it keeps the packaging closed tightly when not in use.

Unzipping the package reveals the DVD snapcase resting inside, cozy and warm!

Can anyone say "barebones release"? Well, it does come with some extras on the two double sided dvd's that come with the set. But the case inside is basic, with a black plastic flipper in the middle that holds the discs. There is no chapter list, no slip sheet inside, no booklet, nothing. Just the two discs ready and waitng for you to view them.

Juice's Verdict

Build Quality: 6
The cover is built well, the parka style packaging is soft yet tough, and the moose attachment is of a nice weight metal.

Content and Extras: 0
Absolutely no extras. Not even a chapter list!.

Overall Rating: 4
You may ask your self, is this ALL I got for around $50? Yes, it is. It amazes me that this set is still priced so highly. If you want to find it for a cheaper price, check eBay or local used stores. I picked up my set for $21, used, but sealed, in a local store.

Season 2 comes in the same packaging, but a yellow color. I'd only pick it up for full price if I was a huge fan of this show. Otherwise, wait until you can find it for a good low price.

I'm dropping the rating of this set to below 5, only because of it's price. Sure, it's a full season, but that's just ONE season for over FIFTY U.S. dollars! Incredibly expensive for something that doesn't have any extras.
