Dr. Seuss How the Grinch Stole Christmas Collector's Edition – DVD Interactive Play Set (USA)

One of my favourite movies is “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” where the Grinch is played by Jim Carrey. This is a Christmas movie but I like to take it out now and then from the shelves since it is such a warm and cosy movie. Have to say that this Collector’s Edition of the movie is also very good for display in your collection. And since it is almost Christmas I would like to tease you with this lovely edition. Let’s take a closer look into the magical world of Mr. Grinch…

This DVD is shaped like a book with green ribbons attached to it. It is almost the same size as an LP and judging by the first look it looks kind of childish. You guys know what? That is the whole meaning of it! This movie are suppose to show us the child within ourselves and I think this packaging fits the movie perfectly.

The first thing you notice when opening this DVD is that the content are not what you expected, at all. This is a pop-up book! You get to discover all this magical themes and The Grinch in 3-D. Again, all credit to those who agreed making this edition. It is funny and makes you smile just by looking at it.

On the first page you get a little closer to The Grinch himself and his dog Max. They are surrounded by strange Christmas elements and a monkey. Don’t ask me who the monkey belongs to.

Next page takes us into Whowille city and their Christmas celebration. All the Who’s are walking around the Christmas three including The Grinch and Max. Nice addition to this page is that on the left side there is a calendar that can count the days until Christmas Eve. On the other side they have made a little opening for the DVD. It is kind of difficult noticing at first where it is placed but it is written “DVD inside” on the Christmas sack. The DVD itself is protected by plastic case so it won’t get scratches when you take it in and out.

The last page in this DVD/Book edition is a from the Whoville post office. The page is colourful and have some little cute additions, like when you pull a little arrow beside The Grinch it is revealed that he’s got Cindy Lou Who captured in paper. These things you as a reader/watcher have to discover by yourself.

On the back of the DVD/Book it is mention all the special features of this movie. You get all sorts of features including Game Demo, DVD-ROM Features, Deleted Scenes, Outtakes and many more.

For the kids you get Max’s Playhouse where you have “Sing-Along-Songs”, Read Along, Music Video and games.

You get a DTS track on the English language and that is a nice addition.

Overall this is nice looking packaging. To keep it together you have to tie the ribbons and it can take some space in your shelves. It have a lot of extras and are very colourful.

Not everyone I talked with enjoyed this movie as much as me ,so be sure to like to movie if you buy this edition. Then you will get more joy out of it. It is also nice to own if you have any children. And of course, nice to own just for the display.

SPI's Verdict

Build Quality: 4
Since it is made like an book it is also made with the same material as a book. Thick paper. Everyone knows that paper can easily be damaged, specially in the corners. The same for this edition. You have to tie the DVD/BOOK with the ribbons, if not it will unfold itself and maybe tear up in the corners. Since the material is very light and easy you have to handle the DVD/Book carefully. I guess they put the green ribbons there not only for the look of it, but also to keep it together. The colours of the cover and the whole set is very nice and they pages are very well made.

Content and Extras: 4
This edition got the same extras and special features as the other regular “Collectors and Deluxe Editions”. You get a lot of extras and some really nice things for the children. A DVD full with extras and bonus material.

Overall Rating: 5
