Another
heroic and epic movie from a great director. This time it was Oliver Stone
and Colin Farell who lead us into a world of courage, love and war. Beside
from the huge history in this movie, does the DVD edition live up to the
movie?
I guess
some of you out there were lucky enough to get a hold of the Limited Edition
of Alexander. For those who didn't there is a second option: Alexander
Collectors Edition. I have to admit I was very sceptic about buying this
movie since I didn't get the chance to see it at the cinema and I'd heard
different opinions about it. So I thought I'd better buy it and make up
my own mind.
I did, and
went for the 2 disc C.E since I didn't know what to expect. And..I have
to be honest..if I didn't like the movie, at least I got to see Colin
Farell with
less clothes.

The front cover of the box is all black. The name Alexander is written on the bottom with golden letters. In the middle of the cover there is a large "A", that of course stands for Alexander. On the top of the cover they have written "an Oliver Stone film". I guess you can't ignore these headings on movie covers. This edition is all made out of thick cardboard and does not have a simple or cheap feeling to it. I think the designers with this Collectors Edition made the second choice for us buyers easier.

This Collectors Editions has an magnetic opening that holds the box together. On the opening "Alexander" is written with the same letters, same color and same size as the cover. When you unfold the box the first thing you see are artworks from the movie printed on the inside. On your right you have a photo with the main character, played by Collin Farell. On the left there is a photo from a battlefield scene. Both are printed on cardboard and is well made. The texture of the paper is thick and give it a strong feeling.

Lets begin with one side, the left. The first thing you seeis the artwork rom the battlefield. The colours they have used here are light and dark. You get the feeling that you are looking at a painting. The text that is written on the photo is "Pictorial Collection". Beneath the photo there is a sort of compartment that is holding art cards and a nice little book. First thing I have to mention, though this is not a limited edition it comes out really well made and so far I am impressed.

There
is a little plastic envelope holding the 12 art cards and when you
open it, the cards smells fresh and new. Kind of the same smell
when you buy new furniture and you sits in them for the first time.
Have to inform you guys, those of you that were expecting images
of Angelina Jolie can be a little disappointed since most of the
images are of Colin. Though he is the main character I see no harm
in putting in some photos of the rest of the cast. But, I am a girl
and I am not complaining.
Like
rest of the packaging the art cards are also made of cardboard and
feels very thick in your hand. The name "Alexander" is written on
most of them in different colours and all of them have different
images. The colouring they have used here is magnificent if I dare
to say. Like I have stated before, you get the feeling that you
are looking at a painting up at the wall or at a museum. There is
also a photo that is like the cover of the box, just with a different
background.
Some
of the images have some poetic text printed on them, but this is
an epic movie so that did not surprise me at all. There is only
one image out of the twelve printed with Angelina Jolie, Val Kilmer,
Colin Farrel and Anthony Hopkins.

Let's
move on to the book, in this case the book replaces the regular
booklet. The text written on the cover is " Highlight & Inside Story
of The Alexander" so my first thought was that this was just like
behind the scenes just in written form.
A
production note. The book is also made out of cardboard and again,
well made. The first page is of course in Korean and since I don't
speak or read Korean it was easy for me just to flip over to another
page. Again you get to see the colourful images and then you get
all exited over this great edition you just bought. The text explains
that you get to read more about the movie so I flipped excitedly
over to next page wondering what I'm about to discover next. But
of course, what I did expect but didn't want to admit, all the text
in the book is in Korean. That was not my happiest moment going
through this edition, but the DVD has some extra features that covers
the same as the book.
Overall the book is well made and holding a lot of nice info and
images from the movie. Here you can also get to see more images
from the other actors and read about them. Each actor has their
own page with photos. You also get to read about the director Oliver
Stone and discover some facts about the making of this movie. If
you know Korean that is.

Finally we have come to the DVD's. The DVD's are placed on the right and can be easily folded out. Disc one is the theatrical cut of the movie which is 175 minutes long. Disc two is, not surprisingly, the special features and extras. You get to see interviews with the cast, making of, trailers, tv spots and a lot more.

Overall this edition is really well made. I can't say it enough. I'm am really impressed over this edition and even though it is "just a " Collectors Edition it is a good addition to your collection and your shelves. If each "Collectors Edition" was made like this and with such a good price I would buy each and everyone of them. You can't really miss out on this edition. Now I have to watch the movie and see if it can follow up the packaging. The box doesn't feel cheap even though it didn't cost me much.

SPI's
Verdict
Build
Quality: 5
The look on the box is great. At first sight it may seem simple but when you discover the colourful images inside and really get to hold it, you can tell that is well made. Hard and thick cardboard that makes it difficult to be destroyed and to get scratches on. Though this edition has a fold out it really holds together.
Content
and Extras: 4
12 Art cards and a book with a lot of information and images. Can you even ask for more? The art cards can you either frame and put them up on the wall or you can keep them in the envelope. Either way they looks good. The book has a lot of colourful images and much information, but unfortunately the text is on Korean, but I'm satisfied even though I can't read it. The DVD itself also got a lot of extras so you won't be missing out.
Overall
Rating: 8
This Collectors Edition stunned me. I was impressed by the design and build quality of it. Of course the box has some really nice extras but the interior and material really pulled this edition up.
If you got the money I would advise you to get both the editions if you can manage to get a hold of the LE. If you are a real collector and enjoy all kinds of editions this is actually a title worth buying twice. Not for the movie, not for the actors, but simply for the packaging and look of it.
