Appleseed (Appurushîdo) 2004 Limited Edition (USA)

written by Juice / photos by Juice

Finally a Limited Edition of this movie! Many fans had been waiting worldwide for a release of Appleseed that included subtitles and dubs. When it was announced Geneon USA would be releasing an edition limited to 8000 copies, there was a great deal of excitement. The question is, does this LE live up to the long wait?

Odd packaging. That's the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this sitting on the shelves in a local store. The DVD and figure included comes encased in a clear blisterpack. The front is the DVD with the LE label, barcode, rating, and feature list for both DVDs.

The back of the blisterpack let's you see the figure, which is Briareos, a main character in the movie.

To get into the pack, you need to cut it apart with either a sharpe knife or scissors. Amazingly enough, the LE numbering is part of the blisterpack. If you want to keep it, you'll need to cut it off the pack or simply keep the empty pack after you open it up. An extremely poor method of including the numbering of an LE.

The blisterpack itself is strong, built of industrial durable plastic. Tough to crush, and even tougher to get into. Be careful when you cut into the pack, the resulting edges are very sharp and can easily cut you.

Let's touch on the DVD case and it's contents before moving on to Briareos.

The case is a nice full color tin, with a stacked DVD set inside on the right, and two sheets of paper on the left. One sheet of paper is a single double sided sheet, with soundtrack information on both sides. The second sheet of paper is a folded sheet that has a the main characters on the front and states "Appleseed Collectors Edition". Opening the fold is a full color spread showing our main characters, and listed on the back is the chapter list.

BRIAREOS! He is 19 1/2 cm tall to the top of his head (not including his "ears") and 7 1/2 inches wide at the shoulders. A little taller than the dvd case, he is nice and heavy, and can stand on his own. Well detailed, his body is contructed of a dense but soft plastic. He comes with plastic straps around his arms, I'm assuming to keep them
from coming off in rough shipment, or from scratching his body due to
movement in the package. His joints turn fairly easily, but be warned, his arms will pop off at the biceps if pushed or pulled to hard. This isn't a fault of the set, it's simply the way he's built. Simply pop the arms back on if this occurs.

Looking a little closer at Briareos, you can really get a good idea of how detailed he is. The soft plastic used for his "antennas" allows them to flex just a bit. His head can pivot on axis. His knees and feet also bend.

His gun is nearly as tall as he is (appropriate size when related to the movie), and is made of a harder plastic than the body. It comes in three pieces; the rifle, a clip, and a single round. The clip slips and will fit snugly into the rifle, and you can slip the round into the clip, but you cannot have the round in the clip and THEN slip it into the gun. Putting the round into the clip pushes out the plastic, making the clip to large to be inserted into the gun.

The gun is well detailed, with green and silver paint adorning it on the scope and stock area. It even has a small flip cap for the front of the scope. Very nice!

Although I like the case, and I enjoy the bonus LE figure, it was really a bummer to have to cut off the LE number and simply stuff it into the DVD case for safe keeping. It's up to you as a purchaser to decide if you feel paying almost twice the price than the non-LE edition is worth the figure.

On that note, it does look nice to have Briareos standing right next to the DVD, his gun in hand ready for action.

- Juice's Verdict -

- Build Quality: 7 -

The DVD case works, but is nothing out of the ordinary. The figure is solid, well built, and nicely detailed.

- Content and Extras: 6 -

Only one real extra here (I'm not counting the fold out chapter list) which is Briareos himself. Figures are a nice extra, so even though he's the only extra, Briareos holds his own and pumps up the score to a 6.

- Overall Rating: 6 -
