Scarface "Limited" Deluxe Edition (USA)

written by Juice / photos by Juice

"Say hello to my little friend!" - Tony Montana as played by Al Pacino.

No-one can deny the power this film had when it was first released, and still has on gangster movies, drug related movies, and even hip-hop culture. I'm sure Tony Montana would have been appalled at the bare-bones releases of "his" story, and thankfully his prayers have been answered with this "Limited" Deluxe Edition.

It's almost like the designers thought to themselves, "What would Tony want?", and did their best to deliver. Would Tony be happy if he was presented with this boxed set, or would he strike down the creators with a sneer and a snort of cocaine. Read on to find out!

Black. Snake. Skin.

That's the first thing you notice when you see this big, beautiful box. The entire box is covered in faux snake skin, black, which a nice high gloss finish. The skin is textured, you can feel the "scales" as you run your hand across it.

Embossed on the front of the box in large silver letters is the name of the movie, SCARFACE, and the name of the lead actor, Al Pacino. Embossed with them are Tony Montana's initials/monogram, TM. This is printed with a matt finish, making it fade in and out as you move the box. It's a great effect.

The box flips open, and is hindged on the back. In a purely opulant manner, the silver and black DVD Scarface box rests in a bed of soft, lucious, pillowy faux satin. Tony would have approved of this if he had this box in his hands.

Spread across the interior back portion of the box is a large image which is a collage of stills from the movie.

The box is divided into two levels. Raise the velvet DVD bed out of the box, and below it rests another level, built out of plush black faux velvet. Again, Tony would approve. Resting ontop of this velvet level are 8 oversized cards, which are typically referred to as "lobby cards". Each card is printed on heavy stock paper, and shows us a still from pivotal scenes in the movie.

Under the cards hides the original Scarface movie, 1 DVD in a snapcase. It is snugly embedded in the faux satin. Also embedded in this faux satin is a Tony Montana money clip. Made from metal, it has the TM (Tony Montana) logo on the front, and his famous quote "The World is Yours" written on the back.

This is really a nice looking set, and is well built, especially being a R1 release. I'm not sure how they decided on the design of the box, but it is truly striking when it sits in your DVD case. The box is well built, rugged and heavy. The faux velvet and satin are nice touches, and it's excellent to open the box and see the Scarface movie sitting in this bed of lush fake velvet.

This is a "limited" edition, but from what I can tell it's available almost anywhere you look. It's a bit pricey, running around $50 USD, but it's worth every penny.

- Juice's Verdict -

- Build Quality: 8 -

Nice, heavy, and built to last. Faux velvet and satin, a nice solid tier system built inside, this set is made to last.

- Content and Extras: 6 -

If you break it down, you really only get 8 cards and a money clip. Still, it's a nice money clip that you could actually use if you really wanted to, and the cards are oversized and sturdy.

- Overall Rating: 7 -
