Silverado 2 Disc Giftset
(USA)
written by Juice / photos by Juice
I was extremely
excited to see this movie get a re-release, and even more excited when
I found it out was going to be released as a giftset, complete with some
special packaging and extras. Hearing that there would be a "scrapbooklet"
and a set of playing cards, as well as the audio and video being remastered,
I waited with dread that it would be a rather poor re-release of a fantastic
flick.
After waiting
a few months, I've finally picked it up and it's time to review this wonderful
Western that came out in the mid 80's!

This reissue of Silverado
comes in cardboard box protected by a thin cardboard slipcover.
The cover is embossed ith the title of the movie, and slides off
to reveal the set itself.

Sliding the slipcover
off reveals pop-up saloon doors, which is fitting for the movie,
since a good deal of it revolves around saloons. The cardboard doors
are made from the standard cardboard of the box, but folded over
to make them thicker and stiffer.
Opening the doors
to the set gives you a first person view of what it would look like
to look down upon a deck of cards, some poker chips, a shot glass
filled with whiskey, and a half-smoked cigar sitting in an ash tray.
Very cool!
Set in the middle
of this image is the deck of cards that comes with this gift set.
They rest sunken into the set, where small cut-outs let you put
your fingers in to pull them out.
The deck of cards
are a remake of the historic brand of Texas No. 45 cards, which
were originally printed back in 1889. The difference between the
cards included in the Silverado set and the historic cards is the
back of the cards, which, instead of having the double star print
originally placed upon them back in 1889, they have the Silverado
DVD case image across the back.

To get to the DVD case, you just open the side of the box. A small compartment
rests behind the deck of cards, where the DVD case and the booklet, which
I'll discuss later, sits. The 2 DVDs rest in a standard snapcase that
comes with a sheet of paper that isn't a chapter list. Instead, it has
a nice image of our 4 Silverado heroes. The back of the slip of paper
is an add for other Sony Pictures westerns.
The booklet that comes with this giftset is the exact same size as the
dvd case.
The cover is printed on a thick stock paper that is printed with a weathered
look, to recreate that wild west feel. The title of the movie and the
double revolvers are both printed with a raised emboss.
The
8 page booklet is divided into 2 sections. The 1st half is a nice, detailed
informational account discussing westerns, heroes in westerns, and the
history of the western. Although it does read a bit like a text-book,
it is very interesting.
The 2nd half of the book has
not writing in it at all, instead, it is a lovely wealth of images that
include not only stills from the movie, but behind the scenes images and
promotional shots.
This is a great movie. For less than $14 USD, you get to enjoy a digitally
remastered flick, you get to read up on the background of westerns and
check out some nice pictures in a solid book, and you get a fully functional
set of cards.
The
box itself is decent, does it's job, and has a little something extra
in it's design that should please anyone who picks up this nifty little
set.

Verdict -
- Build
Quality: 5 -
Five is NOT a bad score, rather, it is simply the mean average between
1 and 10. This is a fairly basic cardboard box, and it does it's job to
hold the DVD case, booklet, and cards.
The "doors" built into the box are nice, but this is not an
overtly sturdy set.

and Extras: 5 -
A nice 8 page booklet and a set of playing cards is...well...average.
- Overall
Rating: 5 -
