Kung Fu Hustle (Hong Kong)

written by Juice / photos by Juice

Kung Fu Hustle! Another Stephen Chow movie to hit the big screens and become a worldwide box office hit! Worthy of multiple LE releases, we'll be reviewing the Hong Kong version here. Interestingly enough, this release was originally stated to include a Limited Edition Kung Fu Hustle watch, shopping bag, and calendar. I did not receive these items with my set, but I have seen others post on forums that they have. I'm still attempting to find out how many of the sets with the extras were given out.

Big box alert! The LE comes in an oversized box with a typical acrylic sheet allowing you to see inside. Viewable through the front is the leather folder that the DVD and most of the extras rest in. On the front and back of the box the extras included are show in full color.

Opening the box and looking down into it, you see that the leather folder is nice and deep. It has to be, because it's built to hold the DVD snapcase, a LE certificate, a hard cover book, a saddle-stitched booklet, and a "Lucky Draw" flyer. You can see that behind the leather booklet is a fairly large, heavy box. Inside that box is the "autographed" palm print, which I'll go into detail about near the end of this review.

The moment you pull it out of the box, you can smell the leather this folder is constructed of. The leather folder is very nice, heavy, well constructed with deep gold embossing across the front. Opening it, you see that it's built with 2 fairly deep, rigid pockets, which are fashioned to hold 99% of the extras in this set.

Starting on the left side, the first thing you see is the numbered LE certificate. It is designed to look like a piece of money, which is fantastic. Very cool, and a great idea! Under the LE cert are two booklets, the first a saddle-stitched booklet (paper that is stapled together). Although I can't read the booklet, it appears to be an informational guide about the movies and characters, and is full of images and stills from the movie.

Behind this small booklet is yet another book, and this one comes wrapped in it's own plastic and is a hardcover. Inside are great spreads taken from the movie, with some fun design elements thrown in for good measure.

Now to the other slot inside the leather folder. We have our single DTS disc release, in a standard snapcase. Behind this DVD case is a small, full color flyer. I'm not sure what it is, but it appears to have a "Lucky Draw" number on it. I'm assuming you can take this number somewhere and perhaps win something with it. If anyone can tell me what this is, I'll update this review with the information.

Now to the largest and heaviest extra included in the set. This is the "autographed" palm print that many forums discussed before it was released. Would it be a true autograph? Would it simply be a printed autograph? Well, it turns out it's neither.

Opening the box sitting behind the leather folder, there is a large, plastic piece that has a palm print in it, as well as a "etched" autograph. The piece is painted bronze, and is not metal, but it is heavy and well constructed. It is also wrapped with bubble wrap and stuffed with paper inside the box, which was a nice thing to see since I'd recently received my Alien vs. Predator LE with a broken piece.

The palm tablet slants up at a slight angle. On the base of it, embedded into the plastic, it states "Kung Fu Hustle Limited Edition DVD Gift Set", and across from that "Stephen Chow". I've included a close up of his name and the signature. On the underside of the tablet itself is the Sony Pictures logo, with their standad legal verbage. This is a nice extra, although it is plastic, it has a good feel to it and almost glows when you put lights directly on it.

Although there has been some confusion as to what actually came with this set (watch, bag, calendar...), what you do receive with this version is nice. Note that you can buy the Korean edition, which appears to have the same content, for much cheaper. This is a great movie, I recommend it to those who have enjoyed past Stephen Chow flicks.

- Juice's Verdict -

- Build Quality: 8 -

I have a weakness for nice leather. That, the well constructed book, and the stylish palm tablet push up my score on this.

- Content and Extras: 8 -

There's a good amount of extra content here. Two booklets, a wonderful LE cert, and the "autographed" tablet. As always, it's a shame the booklets are not in English, but they're designed well and have some great imagery. The palm tablet looks fantastic when placed in your dvd case.

If this had come with the watch, calendar, and bag, I would have given this a 9.

- Overall Rating: 8 -
