Red Dragon Collectors Box (Japan)

written by Tsunami / photos by Tsunami

Well folks. Finally got around to reviewing this old Japanese set. Brought to you by Universal Japan, reviewed for you by Skullface.

So, from the first impressions I got from only seing the promo-shots of this box, and seeing the massive amounts of contents it had, I figured that this was a box, not unlike Scarface (also put out by Universal, the American division). I actually didn't read much about it before I got it, so I had that idea fresh in my mind that this was going to be a big box. So it was a little dissapointment that when it arrived it was merely a hard case slipcase.

After I got over that initial dissapointment I started to see the box for what it was. So lets endulge.

First up to make a comparison, this box is similar to the Indiana Jones Hard Case Slipcase. The letters are embossed, even the smallest letters and that red line seperating the words are embossed, which is a pretty nice detail. The artwork is nice and of high detail.

Looking inside the box well find a regular keepcase for the 2-Disc Premium DTS edition of Red Dragon. Pretty standard thing, they could've gone with a digipac solution, which most definitly would've been alot nicer. Then I pull out a black little cardboard container. With the text "Red Dragon" on the front, and when I open it, and remove the plastic I find the nicest looking senitype frame I have ever seen. Clear plexi with a film cell inside, to the left of the film cell there are some cast credits and the movie title "Red Dragon" underneath. If you turn it over, you can pull out a plate and release the filmcell, but I really don't see why you would. A fantastic filmcell holder.

Then there's a mini fake prop newspaper; "The National Tattler", it actually has news stories inside, nice touch to expand the feel of the movie.

Then there's the tattoo thing. Really didn't see the point of it. I guess its cool for little kids but this movie is aimed for adults so I think this wasn't really needed to complete the feel of the box in any way. There's also a booklet, bigger than most DVD-booklets, but all in Japanese, so pretty useless to people not fluent in the language. There's also a hardbound criminal notebook, this one is actually for the most part in english, I think its in both english and japanese, because theres some japanese on every second page. Maybe the translation of the English texts. And thats pretty much it!

All in all, they've crammed alot of stuff into this slipcase, so for a slipcase its pretty packed and nice. But with this much extras, they could have gone for something a little more fancy than just this cardboard slipcase. It's japanese, it's expensive, but at least its quality!

- Tsunami's Verdict -

- Build Quality: 5 -

Cardboard Slipcase pretty much says it. It's not the most beautiful thing you could imagine, but this one has some nice details as the nice embossed letters on even the smallest word, line and dot, and the high detailed artwork.

- Content and Extras: 8 -

Packed, its got alot of extra stuff in here, the most notable are the hardbound criminal notebook, the senitype and the fake prop newspaper. But with all this extra, they could've gone for something bigger and more outstanding in the exterior department

- Overall Rating: 7 -
