Nightmare Before Christmas (USA)

written by Juice / photos by Juice

The Nightmare Before Christmas. A wonderful story brought to the movie screen by none other than Tim Burton. With a blend of stunning visuals, an incredible soundtrack, and a solid story, Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas quickly became an underground classic. Years after it's initial release in the theaters, we are treated to a lovely R1 special edition set.

This oversized box is appropriately shaped like a coffin, and comes with two lids. One lid sets over the back of the box, and has information about the contents and the movie on it. It's constructed of a thick heavy paper. The second lid comes as the cover of the box. It is a clear plastic of medium weight, that is adorned with the name of the movie and some images from the movie in silver. I really enjoy this type of covering, since it allows you to see the contents of the set, and also has it's own design elements. The plastic is fairly thick, but it does scratch easily, so be careful not to place this up against anything that may damage it. The great thing is you can choose to have either the clear cover, or the solid cover. Either way, the set looks great.

Looking into the box, we see the DVD, which is wrapped in a slip of paper that has the text "Special Edition DVD Set" written across it. The dvd sits snugly in the box, and above it is a nightlight fashioned after the star of the film, Jack Skellington! The inside of the case is made of stiff plastic that is covered in felt. There are knobs inside that keep both the nightlight and the DVD firmly seated.

Sliding off the slip of paper, and pulling out the DVD, we get a standard DVD case with an insert. This is a 1 DVD edition, and the insert has a chapter list and some information about the movie.

The Jack Skellington nightlight is made out of a thick plastic, molded well, with nice attention paid to the detail of the teeth and eyes. The teeth are appropriately yellowed, and it comes with a working lightbulb. Plug this right into your wall, switch it on and voila! It lights up nicely, and really gives off a good spooky glow. I've included a close up shot for maximum effect. tsunami brought up a good point, we're not sure if this will work with wattage oustide the USA.

This set had a good amount of hype revolving around it, especially since there is such a large following to Nightmare Before Christmas. Only a month after I'd received this set, I was out shopping and saw a woman wearing a Jack Skellington shirt with a Jack Skellington zip sweater over it!

- Juice's Verdict -

- Build Quality: 7 -

I can't quite give this an 8. 7 to me means good job, it does it's job, and it's nicer than average, but it's not all that special. The box won't fall apart, but the plastic can be scratched. The nightlight is built well, but it's just a piece of pressed plastic. Good, but not great.

- Content and Extras: 7 -

Another 7, and this one is purely for the coolness factor of the nightlight being fashioned after Jacks head. Other than that, there really aren't any extras. It's a single DVD with only a standard chapter listing inside.

- Overall Rating: 7 -

A solid 7. Above average, but not fantastic. It has a great presence in your DVD case, and the nightlight is exciting to see when lit up!
