X-Files Premium Collection (Brazil)

written by Tsunami / photos by Tsunami

The picture thats probably been on every dvd-related forum. The infamous X-Files Cabinet. Is it limited? Nothing to indicate so, is it cool? Hell yeah! Is it heavy? This is one overweight wooden box! (yes its wood)

Except for the brazilian sites, the only site outside brazil to sell this set was theDVDetective. This enormous beast that weighs around 14 kg, is probably THE coolest looking release ever! As I already revealed in the first paragraph its made of wood. For a long time people thought "The Cabinet" was a metal cabinet. Well, it's not. but its just as cool.

Really the first thing you'll notice about this set is how heavy it really looks. It both looks and feels like a REAL filing cabinet. Going into detail: First thing that catches your eyes are the pictures on both sides and the top. On the right side of the box you have a very very cool picture of Scully and Mulder, on the left side you have a picture of Reyes, Doggett and Scully (again). On the top theres the big X-Files logo, except everywhere on this box it says "Arquivo X", portugese ya know.

In the front you have to drawers, both with a handle and a nameplate. The top one says "Arquivo X - Temporadas 1 - 5", and the bottom one says "Arquivo X - Temporadas 6 - 9", so as you might've have already understood the top one has the first five seasons and the bottom one has place for the last four. The handles and plates are both made of plastic. Looks good but they could've gone with metal, or maybe they were simply trying to keep the weight down.

Opening up the top drawer to reveal the first 5 season, you'll also notice that there's room for one more DVD. So I keep my copy of "Fight The Future" there :)

In the bottom drawer there are a couple of nice extras just reserving the space for you to fill in the last 4 seasons and the rumoured upcoming last and final movie! First there's a T-Shirt. And well I'll be a donkey's behind! It actually says "X-Files" on the front, but oh wait! "Arquivo X" on the back. Then we have the Alien Key-chain, I didn't know it was supposed to be in there before a friend told me he got one in his, so I contacted the store where I bought it. They found it eventually, had misplaced it when opening my box to take pictures of the box for the store. But there it is. And finally the X-files Cap which makes you look like you really had something special with Season 5! I never use any of this stuff, but they are cool extras.

So what make these drawers slide? Well both are equiped with tiny little plastic wheels and are hooked to a metal track screwed into the inside of the box, can easily be taken out by simply pulling the drawer all the way out and lifting it up. What did you think it was? Magic?

Notice that the texture of the paint on the inside of the box it completely different than that on the outside. Something I discovered while taking pictures of this box is that paint is the same as on cars, it can look totally sexy and smooth in one angle and really gray and boring in other angles.

And now I've come to the part in my review where I have to dissapoint you. The box you see on these pictures didn't exactly come this way. If you are to buy this set, make sure you know people that are good with paintjobs if you are going to get it the same way me and my buddy did. Bad packaging and brutal shipping caused the set to crack up in the seems. I recieved my package all banged up. Complained to the store but all I got was an condolance. So I had to get help and fixed the set up to the condition you see on these pictures. What I believe could have saved the release was if the drawers had been pulled out, wrapped in foam....filled the box with foam. And fill the cardboard box with all the part with protective foam. And as an extra measure, I would like to suggest to find a store that can offer you DHL or FedEX, and that extra special packing, before you even begin to consider buying this set.

I managed to retrieve one picture of the damage. The picture is not of my cabinet but the other fella who ordered with me, thanks for letting me publish it and warn people about this.

All in all a great release, good idea to leave room for the rest of the seasons and not forcing people to upgrade the ultimate superduper release that going to be released once all the seasons are out in Brazil. My first impression got ruined by the brutal shipping and somewhat insufficient packing considering its size, but as you can see on these pictures, im now very satisfied with having the release back to the way it should have looked when it arrived.

The set looks excellent. Probably the coolest idea ever conceived when it comes to creating the best theme on a release for a movie/series. Didn't take to well on the brutal shipping. In my opinion it should have been packed better.

- Content and Extras: 9 -

The 5 seasons, will keep you going for a couple of hours, with dvd bonus materials up the ying yang! The cap, the keychain and the t-shirt are all really cool stuff!

- Overall Rating: 9 -

Allthough the set didn't arrive in mint condition, I still give this set a high score, because its just amazing to look at, and a hard-to-get item. Maybe just for the truely hardcore X-Files fan, but still one of the greatest releases.
